Â
The Davidson baseball team returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts Duke in non-conference play.
Â
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Wilson Field.
Â
Davidson (13-6) has won its last seven games, including three against Atlantic 10 foe La Salle over the weekend.
Â
Duke (13-11) is coached by former Davidson pitcher and assistant coach Chris Pollard ('96), who is in his seventh season leading the Blue Devils after successful stints as the head coach at Pfeiffer and Appalachian State.
Â
The Blue Devils reached the NCAA Super Regionals last season.
Â
Last meeting
Davidson was originally scheduled to host Duke on Feb. 19, but rain in the area forced the teams to change the home sites of the two scheduled games this season. That's why the Blue Devils are now coming to town Tuesday.
Â
Duke won the Feb. 19 meeting 7-3 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, thanks largely to a five-run third inning highlighted by Kyle Gallagher's three-run home run. Brett Centracchio drove in all three Wildcat runs, including two on a double in the eighth inning. Max Bazin was the only Wildcat with multiple hits.
Â
Fontes atop the A-10
Designated hitter Ruben Fontes continues to lead the A-10 with eight home runs, four more than anyone else in the 13-team league.
Â
He hit three in the opening conference series with La Salle, including two on Sunday at Wilson Field. One of those hit the flag pole in right center.
Â
Fontes is hitting .257 (19-for-74) with two doubles, a team-leading two triples and more home runs than singles (8-7). Fontes leads the Wildcats with 22 RBI and is second with 10 walks.
Â
Centracchio is one of four A-10 players with four home runs. All of his have come since March 13, when he homered against Winthrop at Charlotte's BB&T Ballpark. Â
Â
Mardiney on a tear
Davidson leadoff hitter Alex Mardiney now leads the team with a .349 batting average.
Â
He has hit in nine straight games, including two hits in each of the last five games. In that stretch, he is hitting .588 (10-for-17).
Â
On Saturday against La Salle, Mardiney reached on two bunt singles. He leads the team with a .474 on-base percentage and 15 walks.
