Davidson and Winthrop renew their Charlotte-area rivalry Wednesday night as part of the Charlotte Knights' Collegiate Baseball Series at BB&T Ballpark.
First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m.
The last time Davidson played at BB&T Ballpark, it faced the same opponent, and the Wildcats beat Winthrop 7-6 on a 10th-inning, walk-off sacrifice fly by then-senior Tyler Agard.
That win on May 10, 2017 was the first of 11 Davidson victories in a 13-game stretch, which included Atlantic 10 Conference and Chapel Hill Regional titles.
Against Winthrop, the Wildcats actually jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning after two-run home runs by Will Robertson and Brian Fortier. Robertson added a solo shot to left in the seventh before the Eagles tied it at 6-6 in the eighth.
In the 10th, Davidson loaded the bases on singles by Eric Jones and Jake Sidwell, with a hit-by-pitch (Justin Lebek) in between. Agard's flyout to left plated Jones to end it.
Davidson was scheduled to play in Charlotte last April, but its game with Duke was canceled because of rain.
Tuesday tests
It's a quick turnaround for the Wildcats and Eagles, who each played Tuesday night.
Davidson (6-5) lost 7-6 at USC Upstate after the Spartans built a lead with a five-run second inning.
The Wildcats scored four runs on four hits in the sixth, and Eric Jones' solo home run in the ninth cut the deficit to one. Jones turned in his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
Winthrop (6-9) is coming off a 9-4 home loss to Bryant, in which the Eagles allowed three runs in the seventh and four in the eighth.
Winthrop's Jake Sullivan hit his third home run of the season in the third inning, while Spencer Yankle saw his 13-game hit streak come to an end.
Knight(s) Series
The Triple-A Charlotte Knights are hosting eight games in their Collegiate Baseball Series this season, as top college teams from throughout the Carolinas will meet at picturesque BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte.
The Davidson-Winthrop game is the fifth installment.
