Four Wildcats homered and senior Casey Sutherland threw six innings as Davidson rolled to a 13-5 season-opening win over Towson Friday night at Wilson Field.
 
Davidson scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to break a 2-2 tie and knocked 12 hits.
 
"I think big picture, it was a lot of good," said Rucker Taylor, who earned his first career victory as a head coach.
 
Eric Jones homered to left — following a 2-RBI triple by Ruben Fontes — to cap a five-run fourth inning as the Wildcats pulled ahead 7-2. Justin Lebek and Alex Mardiney then homered back-to-back in the sixth.
 
Catcher Zach Nussbaum, known more for his defense, went 3-for-4 and homered to left to lead off the seventh.
 
"Nuss really came in and got us ignited in some innings, and I thought he was really good defensively," said Taylor.
 
Sutherland, last year's closer, scattered five hits and struck out six in his return to a starting role. He retired 12 straight batters in one stretch and earned the win.
 
"I think he got better and settled in," said Taylor.
 
Up Next
The Wildcats and Tigers will meet for the second game of a three-game set Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wilson Field.
