THE DAVIDSON-DUKE CONNECTION
Tuesday will be a trip down memory lane for both coaching staffs, as the Blue Devils head coach, Chris Pollard, pitched for Coach Cooke at Davidson from 1993-96. Wildcats assistant Ryan Munger spent four seasons with the Blue Devils, serving as catcher and two-year team captain, while playing in nearly 100 games.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Duke faces league-foe Wake Forest Monday evening, but entered the week at 27-6 and with a No. 10 national ranking. The Blue Devils are currently split in their series with the Demon Deacons, falling 10-2 Friday before bouncing back with a 7-4 victory Sunday. Freshman Joey Loperfido is off to a fantastic debut, leading the squad with a .346 average and .579 slugging. Preseason All-American Griffin Conine tops the team with seven homers. Duke is hitting .267 collectively as a team and posts a 3.36 ERA, totaling over 320 strikeouts.Â
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Davidson is 32-113-1 all-time versus the Blue Devils. The 'Cats most recently nearly upset Duke last season, overcoming an eight-run third to power back, but ultimately fell 8-6 in Durham in their only meeting. Â Brett Centracchio and Justin Lebek each blasted their first career homers in the contest. Lebek went 3-for-4 on the day, scoring twice and driving in three.Â
LAST TIME OUT
The 'Cats picked up their second consecutive A-10 series over the weekend, taking two-of-three from George Mason. The team rattled the league's top pitcher Zach Mort as he surrendered his first extra-base hit, home run, and run in league play by way of junior Eric Jones launching his seventh round tripper Friday. Jones scored three of the 'Cats four runs Friday. Sunday, after losing a three-run lead in the top of the eighth, Davidson responded with a four-run frame, defeating the Patriots 9-5 to move to 6-3 in conference action.Â
UP NEXT
Davidson will continue its road trek, heading to Philadelphia for a three-game series with league opponent Saint Joseph's beginning Friday.Â
