DAVIDSON, N.C. – On a rainy, chilly Saturday afternoon, Davidson baseball was unable to ignite its offense, suffering its second shutout of the season, falling 2-0 to George Mason at Wilson Field.
Davidson slips to 19-11, 5-3 and Mason improves to 14-15, 6-2.
The two teams combined for just six hits on the afternoon, as the 'Cats were held to singles from seniors Andrew Born and Alec Acosta and sophomore Brett Centracchio doubled.
The Patriots took the lead right away, placing a leadoff double down the left field line and coming home on a groundout. They added cushion in the seventh, capitalizing on a Davidson miscue.
The 'Cats threatened in both the second and eighth innings, stranding two men each. In the second, Born and sophomore Walker Imwalle worked back-to-back walks to put two on, and in the eighth, freshman Alex Mardiney was hit-by-pitch and moved to third on Centracchio's double.
Davidson nearly tied the game in the fifth, after junior Max Bazin reached via fielder's choice, advanced to second on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt, and as Mardiney reached first on an error at short, Bazin tried to take home and was called out on a close play at the plate.
The 'Cats and Patriots will face off in the rubber match finale Sunday, slated for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
