SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
George Mason suffered a midweek loss to Longwood Wednesday to drop to under .500 on the season (13-14), but posts a 5-1 record in conference play, sweeping St. Bonaventure and taking the first two games from Richmond. The Patriots are led on the mound by two-time A-10 Pitcher of the Week Zach Mort, who boasts a 1.61 ERA with a league-best 63 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting just .189 against him.Â
Sophomore utility guy Logan Driscoll leads the league with a .425 batting average, boasting a league-best 45 hits and tied for the team-lead three homers. The Patriots are hitting .264 as a teamÂ
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Davidson holds the 3-2 advantage over George Mason all time. The two teams have only played one series in league play, during Davidson's inagural 2015 year in the A-10.The 'Cats most recently downed the Patriots during the 2017 A-10 Championship, winning 6-3 behind Evan Roberts' gem, where he tossed 7.2 innings, fanned a then-career-high eight, and allowed just one walk.Â
Alec Acosta and Eric Jones each recorded two hits in the contest and scored. Acosta blasted his second of a championship-record five homers during the tournament.Â
The win catapulted Davidson into the semifinals and at the time, matched the program record for single-season victories (29).
THE BOMB SQUAD
Davidson ranks 17th in the nation in homers, having blasted 33 long balls this season already. The 'Cats are 20th in the NCAA with 1.18 homers per game. 11 different Wildcats have tallied a round-tripper this season, and eight have hit more than one, ranking them sixth in the nation in the category. Junior Eric Jones leads the squad with six, followed closely by sophomore Walker Imwalle's five. The 'Cats have homered in 15 of their 28 games this year, hitting multiples in nine of them.
LAST TIME OUT
Davidson suffered a 15-5 loss Tuesday at Wake Forest, leading 5-2 before the Demon Deacons exploded for eight runs in the seventh. Sophomore Zach Nussbaum reached base in both of his plate appearances, including blasting his first collegiate long ball (also his first hit of the year), a three-run shot over the left field wall.
Juniors Justin Lebek and Eric Jones also homered, each delivering solo round trips.
THE BULLPEN BEER GARDEN
Saturday will mark the second of four Bullpen Beer Gardens this season. Every Saturday during home A-10 play, fans can take part in the event, which will begin 30 minutes prior to first pitch. Anyone 21 and over can enter the garden set up in the outdoor cage and enjoy adult beverages from NoDA Brewing in Charlotte. Cash or card will be accepted.Â
