DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball picked up its fifth consecutive Friday night victory, outlasting league foe George Mason 4-3 at Wilson Field.
The Wildcats move to 19-10 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Mason drops to 13-15 and also sits at 5-2 in conference action.
The 'Cats usurped one of the top pitchers in the league in the Patriots' Zach Mort, who until Friday had not allowed an extra base hit or a run in league play. The squad was led by junior Eric Jones' 2-for-3 day where he homered, scored three times, including the game-winning run, and played an essential role in bringing in the tying run home.
Sophomore Brett Centracchio plated the tying run, also posting two hits on the day. Junior Allen Barry went 7.2 innings strong, striking out eight (including four in a row). Classmate Casey Sutherland picked up the win, collecting the final four outs, including fanning the first two Patriots in the ninth.
George Mason attacked first, plating a run in the second off a leadoff double and single to the right center gap, then created a 2-0 lead with a solo shot in the third.
Jones cut the lead in half in the fourth, blasting his seventh long ball of the season and bringing his season RBI total to 40, good for the national lead.
Davidson tied the contest in the sixth, taking advantage of the clutch hitting of Jones. He singled to left field and moved to third base on a single up the middle from third baseman Ward Coleman, and then came home on a perfectly laced double down the left field line from senior center fielder Andrew Born.
The Patriots regained the lead in the eighth, using a single, a wild pitch, and Wildcat misplay.
The 'Cats stole the lead back for ultimately the final time in the bottom of that frame after Centracchio led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior Alec Acosta, then moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored after Jones launched a ball sky high into shallow left field, giving the Patriots some trouble.
After advancing to third on a balk, Jones crossed on a fielder's choice RBI from Coleman.
Davidson returns to action Saturday, slated for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch. It will also be the second Bullpen Beer Garden of the season, sponsored by NoDA Brewing Company.
