KINGSTON, R.I. – Davidson baseball picked up its first league series victory of the season Saturday, rattling Rhode Island 6-2 for their second straight win at Bill Beck Field. The win marks the first time the 'Cats have ever taken a series from the Rams.
The 'Cats improve to 17-9 (3-2 A-10), while Rhode Island fall to 6-20 overall and 0-5 in conference.
Wildcats starter Evan Roberts was impressive, striking out a career-high 12, while not surrendering a walk across eight innings. His 12 punchouts are the most for Davidson since Clark Beeker '16 fanned 10 against VCU in 2016.
Senior Alec Acosta recorded his second-straight multi-RBI affair, driving in two as he went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored. Classmate Andrew Born also turned in a 2-for-4 afternoon with a double and scoring twice.
Junior Eric Jones picked up two hits, and sophomore Brett Centracchio tallied two RBI and scored a run.
The game was a pitcher's duel through five, until junior Max Bazin led off the sixth with a chopper between the pitcher and catcher. He took second on a passed ball and then third after Acosta reached via a fielding error to put two on. Another Ram miscue on Centracchio's connection allowed Bazin to score and break the blank.
Acosta then scored on a sacrifice fly from Ward Coleman to give the 'Cats insurance after moving to third on a Jones' single, and Centracchio came home on a RBI groundout to first base from freshman Alex Mardiney.
With a 3-0 lead for the 'Cats, the Rams avoided the shutout after a single and a triple. Davidson fired back to increase its lead after sophomore Greg Lowe led off the seventh with a single, moved up on a single by Born, took third on a sac bunt from Bazin, and scored on a single to the shortstop from Acosta.
Born then came home on a Centracchio single to left field, putting the 'Cats in 5-1 control.
Davidson added cushion in the ninth, when Born led off by taking the first pitch of the inning to center field for a double. His classmate followed suit, as Acosta took his first pitch to left center to drive in Born.
A single, back-to-back walks, and a sacrifice fly allowed Rhode Island to plate a run in the ninth, but reliever Austin Leonard fired back to fan two and secure the series for the 'Cats.
The finale is slated for 10:00 a.m. Sunday.
