KINGSTON, R.I. – In a reversal from a year ago, Davidson baseball pulled off the series sweep Sunday, defeating Rhode Island 6-1 at Bill Beck Field. It is the first time the 'Cats have swept Rhode Island, and their fourth league sweep since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2015.
The Wildcats improve to 18-9 (4-2 A-10), while Rhode Island slips to 6-21 (0-6 A-10).
The sophomore duo of Walker Imwalle and Ward Coleman each blasted long balls. Coleman homered in part of a 2-for-4 day while also knocking in two RBI, and junior Eric Jones registered two hits in his second-straight multi-hit game.
Starting pitcher Josh Hudson improved to 4-1 on the year after tossing 6.2 frames, striking out five (three looking), scattering just five hits and a pair of walks. Senior Connor Gordon delivered 2.1 frames of relief, facing two batters over his minimum while striking out two.
Davidson took the lead early, after Imwalle launched his team lead-tying fifth round tripper of the season, a moonshot that landed on the practice soccer field behind right center.
The 'Cats added insurance the next inning, after Acosta boarded via hit-by-pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a Jones single, coming home on a right field single from Coleman.
Davidson continued to execute offense, scoring three times in the fifth. Lebek and Mardiney led off with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice fly from Acosta brought in his sixth RBI of the series as Lebek came home, and then Mardiney came home on another Jones single. Centracchio, who was walked, added the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.
Coleman recorded his third homer of the season on a solo shot to left in the seventh, but Rhode Island avoided the shutout after a sequence with a hit-by-pitch, a passed ball, and a left side single brought in a run for the Rams during the bottom of that inning.
Davidson wraps up its road-trip Tuesday, traveling to Winston-Salem for the finale of a two-game set with Wake Forest.
