COLUMBIA, S.C. – Despite outhitting the Gamecocks nine hits to seven, Davidson baseball suffered a 5-4 defeat to South Carolina Tuesday at Founders Park.
Junior Max Bazin and freshman Alex Mardiney each tallied two hits each and scored, as Bazin doubled and Mardiney drove in a run.
The Gamecocks first two runs were both unearned, as South Carolina capitalized on a Wildcat throwing error and a misplay in left field.
Davidson tied the contest in the fifth, after senior Andrew Born led off the inning with a walk and moved up on Bazin's line drive single up the middle. Each moved up on a balk, and Born came home on a RBI groundout from sophomore Zach Nussbaum. Bazin then plated the tying run after Mardiney ripped a ball to right field.
The tie was short lived, as South Carolina blasted a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to regain control, and then added cushion the following frame, also by way of homer.
The 'Cats looked to stage a comeback in the eighth, after Mardiney led off the inning with another single, this one to left field, and took second after sophomore Brett Centracchio connected on a ball to right field. A wild pitch moved them both up, and Mardiney came home after junior Eric Jones turned in an infield single near second base. Centracchio plated the final run of the game for the 'Cats on a single from sophomore Ward Coleman.
Head Coach Dick Cooke was honored prior to the game by South Carolina Athletic Director Ray Tanner, who coached with Cooke on Team USA.
Davidson returns to action Friday for league play, visiting Kingston, R.I., to take on 2016 league champions Rhode Island for a three-game stint.
