DAVIDSON, N.C. – A clutch hit from junior Eric Jones and a strong relief appearance from Casey Sutherland proved to be the difference for Davidson baseball (15-6, 1-0 A-10), as the 'Cats picked up their first league win of the season, defeating visiting Fordham 5-4 Friday night at Wilson Field.
The double from Jones was his lone hit of the day, but it drove in what was ultimately the game-winning run in the sixth. Freshman Alex Mardiney, hitting leadoff, tallied two hits with a double and also drove in two. Junior Brett Centracchio went 3-for-5 with a run and RBI, and senior Andrew Born also scored with two hits.
Starter Allen Barry improved to 4-1 on the season, tossing six innings where he scattered five hits and struck out four. Sutherland threw three shutout frames, allowing just one hit and striking out three to pick up his second save of the season.
Fordham took the lead right away after a one-out, two-run homer barely over the foul pole down the left field line.
Davidson tied the contest in the fourth, after junior Justin Lebek led off the game with a single through the left side. Born then singled the opposite way to put two on, and both advanced on a crafty single to third base from junior Max Bazin. Enter Mardiney, who laced the ball down the right field line to bring both Lebek and Born home.
The 'Cats trailed once again after a two-out double scored two Rams in the sixth. The lead was short lived for Fordham, though, as the 'Cats stole it in the bottom of the frame.
Sophomore Walker Imwalle led off the inning with a single to right center, advancing to second on a sac bunt from Bazin and taking third on a groundout. He came home on a ball placed into left field from Centracchio, putting Davidson within one.
After senior Alec Acosta walked to put two on with two outs, Jones hit a high fly ball to deep right center. The ball fell perfectly in between three Rams, bringing both Centracchio and Acosta home to give the 'Cats the lead.
Davidson looked to add cushion in the eighth, after loading the bases with 'Cats with no outs, but despite being unable to bring an insurance run home, was able to seal the deal after Sutherland collected back-to-back strikeouts in the ninth and forced a routine fly ball to center for the final out.
The Wildcats return to Wilson Field for the second of the three game series Saturday, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. It will also be the first Bullpen Beer Garden of the season, where fans 21 and over can experience adult beverages, sponsored by NoDa Brewing Company.
