ROCK HILL, S.C. – Davidson baseball (14-6) had its five-game winning streak snapped Wednesday, falling 3-0 to Winthrop (11-6-1) on the road.
Despite Davidson outhitting the Eagles for the first eight innings, Winthrop used a pair of singles followed by a gap double in the fifth and a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to hand the 'Cats their first shutout of the season.
Sophomore Ward Coleman, junior Max Bazin, and freshman Alex Mardiney each had multi-hit affairs to lead the offense. Bazin and Mardiney doubled, as the 'Cats left a man on in seven of the nine frames and two on in each the second and fourth innings.
Sophomore starter Jaret LaCagnina held the Eagles hitless through four, until Winthrop led off the fifth with back-to-back singles, used a sacrifice bunt to move each runner up, and capitalized on a double down the left field line to bring them both home.
Davidson returns home this weekend, welcoming league foe Fordham for the beginning of Atlantic 10 play. Their Saturday contest will feature the inaugural Bullpen Beer Garden, sponsored by NoDA Brewing in Charlotte.
