DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson baseball will head out for its third road game of the season, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop in the first of a two-game series this season.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Winthrop enters the week on a three-game streak, sweeping conference foe Presbyterian in the opening weekend of Big South Play. The Eagles boast a 8-13 overall record, and are led by junior transfer Cale Gibson's .328 clip. Another offensive threat is junior outfielder Matthew Mulkey, who boasts a team-best five homers and 19 RBI. Senior infielder Mitch Spires leads the team with 26 hits, and also poses trouble on the base paths, having swiped five of seven this season. The Eagles staff boasts a 5.51 ERA collectively, but have tallied 171 punch outs.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Davidson is 13-29-1 all-time against the Eagles. The two squads last faced a year ago in Uptown Charlotte, with the 'Cats winning in extra-inning walk-off fashion. Then-junior Alec Acosta went 3-for-5 with a double and scored. Then-sophomore Max Bazin also doubled, and classmate Allen Barry had three dominant innings of relief, fanning four.

JONES NAMED A-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Eric Jones was tabbed Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, becoming the second Davidson player to ever claim the award more than once in the same season (Will Robertson, 2017). Jones hit for .450 on the week, recording nine hits (including two HRs, a double, and his first collegiate triple), while driving in 13. He scored 6 times and struck out just once in 23 plate appearances, tallying multi-hit affairs in each of the 'Cats three weekend games. Jones is tied for the national lead with 32 RBI, and ranks second in the country in RBI per game (1.68).

LAST WEEK AT WILSON FIELD
The Wildcats went a perfect 5-0 on the week, including defeating their second opponent to receive votes in the national polls. In addition to Jones' stellar play, the 'Cats continued to live by the long ball, with Acosta, Bazin, and sophomores Brett Centracchio and Walker Imwalle each blasting a round-tripper. Imwalle had an impressive outing Sunday, where he started in left field and went 3-for-4 while bringing home three.

On the mound, sophomore southpaw Jaret LaCagnina made two appearances out of the 'pen, including a career-high outing on Wednesday where he struck out seven across three scoreless frames. He finished with a team-best nine strikeouts on the week.

THE BOMB SQUAD
On the cusp of 2018 A-10 play, the Wildcat offense continues to put up impressive numbers. Not only do the 'Cats have double the amount of home runs as the next best team in the league (26), they also rank 14th in the country in the statistic. Ten different players have connected for a home run this season, and eight have hit more than one. Jones leads with five, with Centracchio right behind him with four. Acosta, Imwalle, and junior Justin Lebek each have three, and the trio of senior Cam Johnson, Bazin, and sophomore Ward Coleman have two apiece.

Davidson also leads the league in RBI (126), runs (137), walks (108), OBP (.406), and slugging (.460).

UP NEXT
The Wildcats begin conference action this weekend, welcoming Fordham for a three-game series on Military Appreciation Weekend. Saturday's game will feature the first Bullpen Beer Garden, sponsored by NoDA Brewing Company.
