'Cats Sweep Series and Take Fifth Straight with 18-7 Win Sunday

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball (14-5) picked up its second sweep of the season, cruising to an 18-7 victory Sunday over Mount St. Mary's (3-10) at Wilson Field. The 'Cats have now won five straight for the second time this season (Feb. 20- March 2).
Sophomore Walker Imwalle had a productive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 as he launched his third long ball of the season. He also scored twice. Junior Eric Jones turned in his eighth multi-hit game of the year, registering three hits, scoring three times, and driving in two.
Sophomore Ward Coleman also scored three times and drove in three on a 2-for-3 day at the plate, and freshman Alex Mardiney collected a career-high four RBI with two hits. Junior Max Bazin blasted his second homer of the year, also scoring twice.
In a first inning that took 50 minutes to play, Mount St. Mary's grabbed the lead early on a three-run shot. Davidson quickly reverted that, plating 12 runs as they sent 16 batters to the plate.
The 'Cats tallied eight hits in the first frame, as senior Andrew Born led off with a single that dropped perfectly into right field. Sophomore Brett Centracchio followed that up with a single through the same side, and then Jones poked one through the gap on the left. Coleman pushed his up the middle, and freshman Alex Mardiney drove in two with a single to shallow right. Imwalle's round-tripper was a moonshot to dead center, and then Bazin followed that up with a left-side single. The last hit of the inning was yet another two-RBI gapper from Mardiney.
Davidson added cushion in the second, after Imwalle singled and Bazin homered to left field.
The 'Cats scored again in the fifth, after senior Alec Acosta took a four-pitch walk to lead things off, advancing on Jones' second hit of the afternoon. Both moved up on a wild pitch and came home on a massive double off the wall from Coleman. He too then came home on a double from junior Justin Lebek.
Davidson's final run of the contest came in the eighth, when sophomore Zach Nussbaum brought in sophomore Greg Lowe on a sacrifice fly. Lowe had reached via a single up the middle and moved up two bases on a double from freshman Luke Burton in his first collegiate plate appearance.
The Mount added runs in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings, but couldn't further chip away at Davidson's overwhelming lead.
The 'Cats return to action Wednesday, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop before beginning conference play next weekend, hosting Fordham.
