BLACKSBURG, Va. – Despite Coleman Richards' team-leading third goal of the season, Davidson suffered its first setback of 2017, falling 2-1 at Virginia Tech in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday at Thompson Field.
The Wildcats fall to 5-1-1 overall, while the Hokies move to 3-4-0 on the campaign.
Davidson finished with a 12-11 (7-5 SOG) edge in shots and 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
After Marcelo Acuna's first-half penalty kick put the Hokies up, 1-0, Richards tied the game with his 64th minute strike, which was assisted by Charlie Caswell.
The Wildcats' best chance in the opening half came when Ben Lundgaard made a diving save on a Louis Evans' header. Caswell, Jaylen Thompson, Ned Morrissett and Quinn Dudek also had opportunities to tack on another goal for Davidson, but were unable to convert.
With under 10 minutes to play, Kristo Strickler scored the game-winner to give Virginia Tech its first win over the Wildcats in their last four meetings.
Lundgaard led both keepers with six saves, while Sam Bissett recorded three stops for the 'Cats.

Head Coach Matt Spear Postgame Comments
"The first loss stings a bit, and it's good the guys were disappointed when the game ended."
"But I believe our performance was good. We created more quality scoring chances and we pushed from start to end."
"The penalty kick call was a bit harsh, but I was really happy how the team responded. We actually played better soccer from that point forward as these guys are strivers and can sustain their conviction."
"Our fortitude was better in the second half as we pushed for the equalizer. Charlie did a great job to get possession, shake off contact and deliver the right pass to Coleman who took a great first touch inside then buried it with his left foot."
"When they scored the game winner on a really sharp counter attack and great strike, we had been taking control of the match."
"Virginia Tech is a talented team, that had a great season last Fall in to the NCAA Tournament. So we knew it was going to be a really good challenge on the road, and we love these opportunities. We were definitely up for it; we just did not quite see it through. As the game progressed, it just seemed like a win or tie would be the result. Again credit Tech for the late goal to turn it around."
