DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Josh Hudson delivered a career-best performance Wednesday, leading Davidson baseball to an 11-2 victory over Gardner-Webb at Wilson Field and picking up his first collegiate win.
Hudson tossed a personal-best five innings as he struck out eight, allowing just one run and scattering four hits. Only one Davidson pitcher has recorded more Ks in a game, when senior Durin O'Linger fanned nine in a six-inning performance earlier in the season.
Senior Brian Fortier continued to carry a hot bat, going 3-for-5 with a home run and a double, two runs scored, and two RBI. In fact, the top four hitters in the lineup (junior Cam Johnson, senior Will Robertson, junior Alec Acosta, Fortier) combined for nine of the 'Cats 11 hits. Johnson, Robertson, and Acosta each tallied two hits; Johnson cranked two doubles for the second time this season.
The game was a stalemate until the fourth, when the Runnin' Bulldogs used a walk and double to right center field to get on the board.
The lead was short lived, as Fortier launched his seventh long ball of the season to tie the game back up.
The 'Cats took the lead the following frame, when Johnson and Robertson both boarded via walks, advanced on an Acosta single, and scored on a double to left center from sophomore designated hitter Eric Jones.
It looked like GWU was going to threaten, as they scored in the sixth off a double and a single, but Davidson replied with an eight-run seventh to solidify the victory. The 'Cats used five hits, including the doubles by Fortier and Johnson, and took advantage of four walks, to add their cushion.
Davidson returns to action Saturday, welcoming Siena for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
