DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball split a Saturday doubleheader with Siena, pounding out 17 hits in Game 1 to win 11-8, but falling In the nightcap 8-4. The two will face off in the rubber match Sunday at Wilson Field, slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
The Wildcat offense was led by junior Alec Acosta, who registered five hits on the day, including three doubles, while tallying three RBI and scoring twice.
GAME 1: DAVIDSON 11, SIENA 8
Davidson cranked out 17 hits in the opening game, with eight of the nine starters in the lineup registering at least one hit. Acosta, junior Cam Johnson and sophomore Justin Lebek each recorded three, with senior Will Robertson, sophomore Eric Jones, and freshman Zach Nussbaum registering two a piece. Senior Brian Fortier added three RBI, smashing his eighth homer of the season.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Acosta and Johnson each walked and Fortier did what he does best—launched a ball to his sweet spot on the left field hill, his third three-run shot of the season and eighth overall.
The 'Cats added two more runs the following frame, after four straight singles through the left side from Nussbaum, Johnson, Robertson, and Acosta.
The shutout was avoided when the Saints plated a run in the top of the fifth off a sacrifice fly, and then scored twice in the sixth courtesy of a double and two singles.
With the score 5-3, the 'Cats tacked on two more runs in the sixth; Robertson doubled, took third and scored on a Siena miscue, and Jones doubled and scored on a single from Lebek.
Siena continued to play cat-and-mouse, scoring three runs in the eighth on three hits and an error. Davidson responded once again, coming home four times in the bottom of the inning. Lebek and classmate Max Bazin each walked and then scored on a gap single from senior Tyler Agard, who himself crossed home on a Johnson single. Nussbaum, who had also reached via single, was brought home by Acosta.
The four runs proved to be insurance, as Siena tacked on another two runs in the top of the ninth before senior closer Westin Whitmire came on to collect the final two outs and earn his fourth save of the season as Davidson took the 11-8 win. Whitmire now has sole possession of third place all-time for career saves.
GAME 2: SIENA 8, DAVIDSON 4
The Saints scored right away, but the lead was short lived as the 'Cats plated three runs in the first to regain control. Acosta doubled, Fortier walked, and both were brought home on a ball up the middle from Lebek. Jones, who was on via hit-by-pitch, scored on another single up the middle, this time from Bazin.
Davidson added a run in the bottom of the second on a solo shot from Robertson, his first of the season, but were quieted after that.
Siena cut the lead in half in the fourth on a double, wild pitch, and single, then took the lead in the sixth, scoring three times. They added runs in each of the final three innings to solidify the 8-4 victory.
Acosta doubled twice in the nightcap, a feat he has now achieved three times in his career.
