DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball (6-4) snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday, cranking out 12 hits as they topped Hartford (1-4) 7-5 at Wilson Field.
Four Wildcats turned in two hits apiece; sophomore Justin Lebek doubled and tallied two RBI, classmate Eric Jones and junior Cam Johnson each scored twice, and junior Alec Acosta scored one run and added one RBI.
Junior Josh Smutzer improves to 3-0 on the year, tossing seven innings and striking out three, and senior Westin Whitmire collected his third save of the season, now tied for third place all-time in career saves.
The 'Cats wasted no time, as Johnson and veteran Will Robertson pulled out back-to-back singles in the first inning, and Johnson advanced to third on a fielder's choice from Acosta. He then scored off a passed ball to get Davidson on the board.
The lead was short lived after a two-run Hartford homer, and then the Hawks added insurance in the fourth, scoring two more times.
The 'Cats struck back in the bottom of the fifth, plating four runs to take the lead back. Johnson used a walk, passed ball, and Acosta single to score and Robertson (who boarded via hit-by-pitch) moved to third on Acosta's ball and scored on a single chopped down to third base from sophomore Eric Jones. Acosta and Jones both came around to score on Lebek's double.
In the bottom of the seventh, Davidson added cushion courtesy of freshman Zach Nussbaum, who registered his first collegiate hit with a two-RBI single up the middle that scored Lebek, who walked, and Jones, who singled.
Hartford battled in the eighth, adding a run off a double to left center. Dynamic fielding from sophomore shortstop Max Bazin kept the threat at bay and ended the inning with no further damage.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday, taking on Butler in a Sunday showdown at 1:30 p.m.
