DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball (7-4) collected its first walk-off victory of the season, trumping Butler 3-2 Sunday at Wilson Field.
Senior Brian Fortier had an unblemished day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Fortier's long ball was the equalizer in the bottom of the eighth, and his go-ahead single up the middle scored freshman Zach Nussbaum, giving the 'Cats the 3-2 win.
The game was a stalemate through five and a half, when senior Will Robertson, who had just made a diving snag in center to keep the Bulldogs off the board, led off with a walk. He advanced to second on a single from junior Alec Acosta, and scored on a single to left field from Fortier.
Butler took advantage of a walk, hit, sac fly, and an error in the eighth to take the lead, until Fortier's solo shot halfway up the hill in left field tied things back up.
Nussbaum collected his second-ever collegiate hit to put a runner on with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Junior Cam Johnson worked his second walk of the afternoon to put two on, and Acosta was hit-by-pitch to load the bases to present the ultimate pressure situation for Fortier.
Bases loaded, two outs, tie game, and he cracked the ball back up the middle, bringing home Nussbaum and giving Davidson the walk-off win.
Butler looked like they would have the lead first, when a single and fielding error in left field sent the Bulldogs heading for home. Lebek found his cutoff man, Acosta, who fired the ball high to Nussbaum, who lept and brought the tag down to get the runner and keep the shutout (at the time) intact.
Senior Westin Whitmire picked up his first win of the season, tossing two innings of relief, and junior Evan Roberts, in his first start of the season, turned in an outstanding performance, throwing 6.1 innings, scattering four hits, allowing no walks, and fanning five.
The Wildcats return to action Tuesday, welcoming Gardner-Webb to Wilson Field for a 6 p.m. showdown.
