DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball (4-2) recorded double-digit hits for the third-straight contest, as the Wildcats defeated the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh 7-4 at Wilson Field Saturday.
Senior Will Robertson led the 'Cats offensively, doubling twice in a three-hit day and also plating a run. Classmate Brian Fortier cranked out his fifth homer of the year and also doubled, and sophomore Justin Lebek tripled as part of a two-hit outing. Senior Jake Sidwell scored twice, and junior Alec Acosta registered two RBI.
Fortier has now registered more homeruns this season than in his three previous seasons combined, while Robertson matched a career-best for doubles in a game, tying his performance from Winthrop in 2015.
Davidson took the lead right away, as Sidwell boarded via hit-by-pitch, took two bases on Fortier's double to left center, and then came home on Acosta's single through the right side gap.
The Mountain Hawks tied it up the following frame on a solo shot, before the 'Cats took the lead once again, as Robertson connected for his double and crossed home after shortstop Max Bazin forced a two-base Lehigh error. Bazin then came home on a Lebek single that he poked through the right side.
Up 3-1, Lehigh again used the long ball to tie the game in the top of the 3rd, before Fortier sent his ball sailing deep up the hill beyond left field and putting the 'Cats in the lead for what would ultimately be the final time.
They added cushion in the 4th, after Lebek (who sliced a ball down the right field line for his triple) and senior Tyler Agard (hit-by-pitch) each scored on a wild pitch.
Davidson tacked on its final run in the 6th, after Sidwell singled and came home on Acosta's sacrifice fly.
Lehigh threatened in the final frame, scoring once on a walk and RBI groundout.
Junior Josh Smutzer earned his second win in as many starts, working 5.1 innings and striking out four. Sophomore Austin Leonard went 2.2 innings of relief, also fanning four, and classmate Casey Sutherland wrapped things up with a solid inning, allowing just one hit in four batters he faced.
The Wildcats conclude their weekend Sunday, facing Fairleigh Dickinson (0-5) at 1:30 p.m. Sophomore Allen Barry is slated to start.
