CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Joel Berry II scored a game-high 27 points and Luke Maye recorded 24 points and 17 rebounds to lead nationally-ranked North Carolina past Davidson, 85-75, Friday evening at the Spectrum Center.
Despite the setback, Peyton Aldridge paced three Wildcats in double figures with 22 points. Jon Axel Gudmundsson scored 19 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 6 assists, while backcourt mate Kellan Grady added 18, including four treys.
In addition to controlling the glass, 54-23, the Tar Heels finished with 25 second-chance points and outscored Davidson, 48-18, in the paint.
After an Aldridge layup made it a four-point contest, 56-52, North Carolina (7-1) broke the game open with a 20-6 run to push the margin to 18, and put the game out of reach.
The Wildcats, who entered leading the nation in 3-pointers per game (13.8), assists per game (21.8) and assist-ratio (2.48), drilled 14 treys and handed out 19 assists on 26 field goals.
Davidson (3-3) jumped out to a 17-10 advantage, but the Tar Heels responded with a 10-2 spurt to grab their first lead, before heading to the break up, 43-37.
Maye tallied his fifth career double-double prior to intermission, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the opening period.
Kenny Williams also hit the 10-point plateau for UNC with 12 points.
