CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In addition to a lengthy second-half run, Peyton Aldridge scored a game-high 25 points and Kellan Grady added 22, as Davidson captured its fifth straight "Battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy" with an 85-70 win over cross-county rival Charlotte, Tuesday at Halton Arena.
Jon Axel Gudmundsson was just as impressive for the Wildcats with 12 points, 10 assists (1 turnover), 6 rebounds and 4 steals in 35 minutes of action. Rusty Reigel also scored in double figures for Davidson (3-2) with 11 points off the bench.
Despite going just 8-of-29 from behind the 3-point line, the 'Cats shot 53.1 percent after intermission to conclude the 44th all-time meeting at 51.6 percent.
The Wildcats broke open a 45-41 contest with a 20-6 streak midway through the second half to push the margin back to double digits where it would stay. Davidson's lead grew to many as 22 with just under four minutes to play.
Davidson finished with a 37-30 advantage on the glass and scored 46 points in the paint, while improving on its nation-best assist-to-turnover ratio with 22 more dimes.
Both Aldridge (15) and Grady (13) went over the 10-point plateau in the first half for the Wildcats, who led by 11 in the period before going to the break up, 37-32.
Andrien White paced Charlotte (3-3) with 22 points, including a 12-of-13 effort from the line.
