‘Cats Take Series From Lafayette For Cooke’s 500th Win

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson's Casey Sutherland threw a one-hitter en route to a 5-2 victory over Lafayette College Sunday afternoon in the final game of the weekend series at Wilson Field for head coach Dick Cooke's 500th career win at Davidson.
Sutherland, who registered his first start in a Wildcat uniform, pitched the first 5.1 innings and allowed only one hit, a double that came in the sixth, two runs – one earned – with four strikeouts for his first career victory.
The win lifted the Wildcats to 6-5 overall and moved Coach Cooke to 500 career wins in his 26th season at Davidson.
Davidson outhit Lafayette (2-6), 5-1, with five different Wildcats registering a hit, including Sam Foy who went 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Alex Woinski picked up the lone hit for the Leopards.
It was a scoreless game until the fourth when the Wildcats scored Foy, who drew a lead-off walk, on a sacrifice fly from Adrian Mayans to make it a 1-0 ball game.
After Lafayette tied the score in the fifth off a Wildcat error, Davidson took back the lead in the next at bat scoring on a double steal led by Cam Johnson who reached on a strikeout wild pitch. Davidson then drew three-straight walks on two outs that allowed a run to cross for a 3-1 lead.
Davidson recorded insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings that secured the victory.
Four Leopards appeared on the mound for Lafayette, including John Cain who pitched the first 4.2 innings and allowed three runs – one earned – off one hit with eight strikeouts and seven walks for the loss.
Evan Roberts and Cody White appeared in relief for the Wildcats, before Westin Whitmire pitched the final two innings and recorded two strikeouts for his third save of the season.
The Wildcats will return to Wilson Field Wednesday, March 9 when they host James Madison at 6 p.m.
