DAVIDSON, N.C. – James Madison rallied for four-straight runs in the final three innings to edge the Davidson baseball team, 7-6, in mid-week action Wednesday night at Wilson Field.
With the game tied at six heading into the final inning, James Madison (7-6) scored off an infield error to secure the win.
Michael Evans, who was the seventh pitcher to appear on the mound for the Dukes, retired three-straight in Davidson's (6-6) final at bat to record the win. He finished the day with one strikeout.
Westin Whitmire recorded the loss for the 'Cats, pitching the final 1.1 innings and allowing one run, which wasn't earned, off two hits with two strikeouts. Whitmire was the seventh Wildcat to appear in relief as freshman Josh Hudson recorded his first career start allowing just one hit with one strikeout in 2.1 innings.
James Madison outhit Davidson, 10-6, while the Wildcats committed three errors to the Dukes' one. Ky Parrott led both teams going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while six different Wildcats recorded a hit.
Davidson started the day off scoring two in the second inning after leading off with two-straight singles from Lee Miller and Brian Fortier. After Jake Sidwell drew a walk, all three Wildcats advanced on a wild pitch that allowed Miller to score. A passed ball allowed Aaron Tovsky to reach along with scoring Fortier as Davidon took the 2-0 lead.
After a RBI single from Andrew Born in the fourth that extended the Wildcat lead to three, a solo homerun from pinch hitter Tyler Carroll sparked the Dukes in the fifth. JMU continued with three-straight hits, including a two-RBI double, before a Davidson error that tied the ball game.
James Madison added three more runs over two innings before Tovsky sent a long ball to the left of the scoreboard for his second homerun of the season in the eighth to tie the score at six, but it was not enough for the 'Cats.
Davidson will return to action when it travels to Buies Creek, N.C., for a four-team round robin this weekend, starting Friday against host Campbell at 7:30 p.m.
