Johnson Leads ‘Cats to 7-4 Come-Back Victory at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Centerfielder Cam Johnson's three-hit performance helped lift the Davidson baseball team over Campbell, 7-4, Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
Johnson went 3-for-6 including an RBI triple in the eighth that capped off a four-run come-back for the Wildcats. Johnson also tallied three runs scored.
Davidson (7-6) started the night off with an early 1-0 lead after Cam Johnson recorded a lead-off double to get things going in the first. An Aaron Tovsky walk and Sam Foy single loaded the bases before Lee Miller sacrificed for the first run of the ball game.
Campbell (7-7) countered in the second, before taking a 4-1 lead in the fourth off four hits, including a two-RBI homerun by Brian Taylor.
After two runs in the fifth, the Wildcats tied the score at four off four walks from reliever Grant Yost that allowed Tovsky to score.
Davidson pulled away in the eighth after Andrew Pope singled to shortstop and later scored off a Johnson triple to take the lead. Johnson made it a two-run ballgame off a Tovksy sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Wildcats secured the ballgame with a run in their final at bat thanks to a lead-off walk by the Camels. Brian Fortier scored off a fielder's choice that allowed Pope to reach on two outs.
Clark Beeker recorded the win for the 'Cats, allowing four runs, two earned, off five hits with five strikeouts in seven innings to move to 3-0 on the season. Evan Roberts pitched the final two, allowing just one hit for his first save of the year.
Zach Minnick recorded the loss for Campbell, allowing three runs off two hits and four walks in relief.
Davidson will return to the field tomorrow, March 12 when it faces Indiana State for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
