DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite a late rally in the eighth, the Davidson baseball team fell to the Georgetown Hoyas, 5-3, in game two of the weekend series Saturday at Wilson Field.
Down 5-0, Davidson (3-3) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth when Jake Sidwell recorded a one-out single to center field before Tyler Agard doubled for a RBI to left center. With two outs, Andrew Pope reached on a fielding error by Michael Derenzi in right field that allowed Agard score before Cam Johnson recorded a RBI single to right field, which made it a two-run ball game.
But the Wildcats couldn't catch Georgetown (2-3), who scored two runs early in the first and three runs late in the top of the eighth, which eventually secured the victory.
Despite the loss, Davidson out hit the Hoyas, 10-7, with four Wildcats recording multiple hit performances.
Simon Mathews pitched the first six innings for Georgetown, allowing just five hits with five strikeouts and three walks for the win. Durin O'Linger started the first 4.1 innings for the 'Cats and allowed two runs, which were earned, off two hits with four strikeouts for the loss.
David Ellingson picked up his first save of the season as he faced the final four batters in 1.1 innings for the Hoyas.
Both squads will return to Wilson Field tomorrow, Feb. 28 to conclude the weekend series at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed.
