DAVIDSON, N.C. –Sam Foy's 2-for-3, three RBI performance led the Davidson baseball team to a 12-8 victory over Georgetown to close out the weekend series Sunday at Wilson Field.
Foy started out the day with a RBI triple in the first inning, before a single to right field, a sacrifice fly and RBI hit by pitch that completed the day for Davidson (4-3).
Georgetown (2-4) out hit the Wildcats, 15-13, but left on 16 batters thanks to the Davidson defense. The Wildcats turned in two double plays and struck out eight Hoyas overall.
In addition to Foy, three other Wildcats recorded multiple hit performances, including Alec Acosta who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Michael Derenzi led both teams with an impressive 6-for-6 performance for Georgetown.
On the mound, Connor Gordon, who relieved starter Josh Smutzer, recorded the win by allowing two unearned runs off four hits with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Three other Wildcats appeared in relief, including Westin Whitmire who allowed just one hit in the final 1.1 innings for his second save of the season.
Six Hoyas appeared on the mound, including starter Kevin Superko who allowed six runs, five earned, off seven hits with four strikeouts in the first 4.1 innings for the loss.
Davidson recorded another hot start, picking up four runs off five hits in its first at bat. It would be a 4-0 ball game until the third inning where Georgetown gained momentum and scored five unanswered runs between two innings to take the 5-4 lead at the start of the sixth.
Two Wildcat runs crossed in the fifth thanks to a Cam Johnson double that scored Andrew Pope, who reached on a fielding error in right field, as Davidson regained the lead at 6-5.
The Wildcats took control of the game with a huge sixth inning, scoring five off four hits. Another fielding error started off the inning, this time by the catcher that put Will Robertson on base. A Brian Fortier single and an Eric Jones sacrifice bunt put the Wildcats in scoring position before Pope recorded a two RBI double that made it a 8-5 ball game. Davidson closed the inning three more hits and a sacrifice fly to take the 11-5 lead.
A run in the seventh and three more in the eighth by Georgetown threatened the Wildcats before Whitemire appeared on the mound to silence the game.
Davidson will return to action Tuesday, March 1 when it travels to Duke for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
