DAVIDSON, N.C. – In their final home match of the 2016 season, Davidson volleyball dropped a heartbreaker Saturday, falling in five sets to VCU by scores of 25-23, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22, 15-8.
Davidson slipped to 10-16 overall, 5-7 in A-10 play, while VCU improves to 18-11 and 8-5 in the league. The 'Cats could still clinch a spot in the Atlantic 10 tournament, despite the loss.
The Wildcats honored their two seniors, Emily Franklin and Mikayla Derochie, prior to the match, and introduced several DCVB alumni during intermission as part of their 30th anniversary celebration.
"I'm so proud of the effort and grit that our girls exhibited today in the match," head coach Chris Willis said. "We made a lot of changes in our system, and they bought in. I think it gave us a few advantages, but in the end, VCU played better than we did, so give them credit. We have a little bit of work ahead of us, but we hope to be in Saint Louis [for the Atlantic 10 Championship] in two weeks."
Sophomore Sabrina Shepherd had her best performance of the season, falling one kill shy of her career-high, recording 17 for a stellar .556 hitting efficiency. Classmate Mason Rooney recorded her second triple-double of the year and third of her career, registering 10 kills, 25 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Katharine Franz turned in a career-high .455 hitting percentage.
Davidson took the first set, holding a lead by as many as four before taking the set 25-23. The Rams fired back, taking the second set, leading by as many as six.
The 'Cats came out of intermission with a mission, picking up the first two points off two service aces from Derochie and going up by as many as eight in the frame. VCU kept it close, fighting back to come within two before Rooney sealed the set with a kill, 25-22.
VCU took the fourth set after holding a commanding lead they would never relinquish, despite the Wildcats fighting back two within two before falling 25-22.
The Rams maintained the momentum, picking up the fifth set 15-8 and the match 3-2.
Davidson heads out for its final road trip of the year, traveling to Saint Louis and league-leader Dayton for games on Friday and Sunday, Nov. 11-13.
