Gibbs and Wildcats Cruise to Road Win at Mercer, 78-57

MACON, Ga. – Jack Gibbs drilled eight 3-pointers and scored a season-high 33 points to lead Davidson past Mercer, 78-57, in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday evening at Hawkins Arena.
Gibbs, the nation's sixth leading scorer a year ago, finished 11-of-20 from the floor en route to his 13th career performance of 30 points or more.
Peyton Aldridge and Will Magarity joined their fellow captain in double figures with 18 and 10 points, respectively.
In addition to hitting 14 treys, Davidson (5-1) held the Bears to just 37.5 percent overall and forced 18 turnovers that resulted in 23 points at the other end.
As a team, the Wildcats shot 45.3 percent, finishing with 20 assists on 29 makes.
Davidson raced out to a 21-9 advantage, hitting 8-of-12 from the floor including five 3-pointers. Despite a scoring drought of almost six minutes, the Wildcats closed the first half with four straight treys, highlighted by a 25-footer at the buzzer from Gibbs, to take a 41-27 lead into the break.
The Wildcats opened the second half with eight straight points and eventually stretched the margin to as many as 27 to put the game out of reach.
Ryan Johnson led Mercer (4-3) with 10 points in 17 minutes off the bench.
Rusty Reigel also turned in a solid effort for Davidson with 7 points, 5 rebounds and a game-high 6 assists.
