Davidson Falls In The Eighth At Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Four runs in the eighth lifted the Winthrop Eagles over the Davidson baseball team, 6-3, Tuesday night at the Winthrop Ballpark.
After two walks, Winthrop (19-10) recorded three hits that scored four runs to take a 6-3 lead in the eighth inning that eventually secured the game and dropped the Wildcats to 13-10 overall.
Winthrop outhit Davidson, 10-9, while it committed two errors compared to the Wildcats' one. Second baseman Sam Foy led the Wildcats with three hits, one run and two RBI in five at bats, while three Eagles notched two hits each for the win.
In the third, the Wildcats got on the board first with three runs off four hits and the first Winthrop error. Davidson led off with two-straight doubles with third baseman Ben Arkin scoring left fielder Nathan Becker for the first run of the ballgame. Foy completed the three-run inning with a homer that also scored catcher Jake Sidwell, who walked, for his first homerun of the season.
The Eagles took the lead off six unanswered runs, four of which came in the bottom of the eighth.
On the mound, RHP Nick Neitzel started the day off for the 'Cats, allowing just two hits in 2.0 innings. LHP Evan Roberts allowed the first Eagle run off four hits and struck out four in 3.2 innings. Two other Wildcats pitched a combined 1.2 innings and allowed two runs, before RHP Cody White allowed three runs off one hit, while walking two.
Five pitchers came to the mound for Winthrop as RHP Travis Shelley got the win as he closed out the game with allowing just one hit in the final 1.2 innings.
Davidson will return to action this weekend when it travels to Rhode Island for an A-10 weekend series starting Friday, April 3 at 3 p.m.
