‘Cats Take First Game Of Series From Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Senior Clark Beeker limited the Rams to just two runs over 8.1 innings to lead the Davidson baseball team to a 7-2 win over Rhode Island, Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
In addition to picking up his second win of the season, Beeker recorded six strikeouts while allowing just five hits.
Davidson (14-10, 4-3 A-10) outhit the Rams, 14-5, while neither team committed an error. Shortstop Alec Acosta went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead both teams, while four other Wildcats finished with multiple hits in the series opener.
First baseman David Daniels got the 'Cats on the board with his third homerun of the season that scored two in the third. Davidson ended its third at bat with a 3-0 lead.
After the two teams traded runs in the fourth and fifth, the Wildcats secured the ball game with three runs in the sixth inning.
After Beeker's eight innings on the mound, RHP Josh Smutzer stepped in for the final two outs and kept it a 7-2 ballgame.
Rhode Island (7-11-1, 1-3 A-10) used four pitchers on the day, including Steve Moyers who pitched the first five innings, allowing five runs off eight hits with three strikeouts.
The two teams will return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
