RICHMOND, Va. – After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, George Mason edged Davidson 4-2 in penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Tournament Thursday afternoon at Sports Backers Stadium.
Patriots' keeper Michael Butts turned away kicks from Alan Reiter and Christian Fechter to set up the defending champs match up with top-seeded Rhode Island Friday. Shane Macnamara and Luke Blades were successful with their attempts for the Wildcats, while Timi Mulgrew, Jannik Eckenrode, Conlan Kemmerer and Daniel Hoffman converted their tries for Mason.
The Wildcats, who are enjoying their most successful season based on winning percentage since 1971, move to 10-2-6 overall.
Davidson finished with a 13-9 advantage in shots, while George Mason (11-3-5) held an 8-5 margin in corners.
In addition to the two teams finishing tied for fourth in the regular season standings, the Patriots defeated the Wildcats 2-1 on a penalty kick in overtime nearly three weeks ago.
Matt Pacifici led both keepers with five saves en route to his seventh clean sheet of the season.

Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
Absolutely no regrets on the team's effort today - the guys left it all on the field. We played better against them than the last time, we had more shots than them, we connected more passes with more possession than them, and we shut them out.
Being on the wrong side of a PK shoot out to decide a tie is cruel and hard. I never believe a game is determined by any one or two plays and I believe the body of work the guys delivered was strong and worthy.
We are focusing on two things. First, how amazing our Seniors are as players, as warriors, as leaders, as men of impact. We - and I mean not just not this team, but our program and Davidson - are better because of them. And second we focus on the achievements of this season including two wins over ACC teams, a strong first impression in the A-10, going undefeated on our 1992 Team Field, and being one of only five out of 205 Division I teams to have two regular season losses.
I told and want the team to grasp how much pride they instilled in their families, the alumni and many others that love Davidson through their performances and belief and brotherhood in this campaign.
