STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern halted a Davidson rally by tagging out the potential tying run at home plate, defeating the Wildcats, 3-2, in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at JI Clements Stadium.
Pinch hitter Ty Middlebrooks hit a double to the gap in left field with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to drive in another pinch hitter, Daniel Gerow, and pull Davidson (8-13, 4-7 SoCon) within one. However, Middlebrooks was thrown out at home by left fielder Scooter Williams when he attempted to score from second base on a single through the left side by pinch hitter Aaron Ruzinsky.
The game had been a pitcher's dual as LHP Jason Richman (4-1) pitched into the ninth for Georgia Southern (15-7, 7-1 SoCon) and was charged with both runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. RHP Matt McCall (3) earned the save by earning the final two outs.
The Wildcats received another strong outing from RHP Danny Mooney (3-2), who allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.
Third baseman Brent Pugh drove in all three GSU runs, hitting an RBI-single in the second inning and a two-run home run in the fourth inning. He and Stryker Brown led the Eagles offensively, as both went 2-for-3.
First baseman Andrew Barna hit an RBI-single in the sixth inning for Davidson's first run, driving in second baseman Sam Foy, who led the 'Cats with a 2-for-4 day at the dish.
The two teams will complete the three-game series Sunday with first pitch slated for 1:30 p.m.
