STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern broke a deadlock in the fifth inning to edge Davidson, 6-4, in Southern Conference baseball action Friday night at JI Clements Stadium.
The two teams will continue the three-game series Saturday, but first pitch has been moved two hours earlier to 12:30 p.m.
First baseman Andrew Barna gave Davidson (8-12, 4-6 SoCon) an early lead with a two-run home run in the first inning, but Georgia Southern (14-7, 6-1 SoCon) scored four runs in the third inning on sacrifice flies by shortstop Ben Morgan and catcher Chase Griffin and a two-run home run by first baseman T.D. Davis.
Second baseman Sam Foy drove in two runs to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning with a double down the left field line, but Griffin hit an RBI-single in the bottom half of the inning to give the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. Designated hitter Stryker Brown added an RBI-double in the eighth inning.
Both teams just used two pitchers each. LHP Sam Howard (4-2) started for the Eagles and allowed all of the Davidson scoring on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in 6 1/3 innings. RHP Justin Hess finished the game, allowing just two walks and striking out four for his third save of the season.
RHP Ryan Lowe (2-3) allowed five runs on five hits and two walks and also struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings of work. RHP Jip Richards finished the game, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with two stirkeouts.
