DAVIDSON, N.C. — Led by 20 kills from sophomore outside hitter Caroline Brown, the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team took down the Wofford Terriers in a five-set comeback win (25-20, 16-25, 27-29, 25-18, 15-11) Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena.
After winning the first set, Davidson (11-4, 1-1 SoCon) had to fight back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Wofford (10-6, 0-2 SoCon). Senior outside hitter Christine Perzinski finished with 13 kills and sophomore middle hitter Taylor Pisel added a career-high 12. Making her first career start in junior setter Ariel Ley's absence, freshman Anastasia Owen finished with 48 assists, eight digs and a block. Junior libero Molly Crenshaw led all players with 24 digs, and Brown and Perzinski both finished with double-doubles with 14 and 16 digs, respectively.
Rachel Woodlee led the Terriers with 14 kills and 10 digs, and Arden Anderson and Amanda Liguori each finished with 11 kills. Bekah Dorsey tallied 45 assists, and Reagan Styles paced the defense with 16 digs.
With the first set tied at 13, Davidson took control of the back-and-forth frame with a 6-2 run, including a pair of kills by Brown, to open a 19-15 lead. Wofford won three of the next five points, but back-to-back kills by Pisel and Brown followed by an ace from sophomore defensive specialist Jenna Ptaschinski pushed Davidson's lead to 24-18, enough for the 25-20 win.
The second set was tied at 10 when Wofford took a 20-12 lead behind a 10-2 run. The teams traded points over the next eight possessions, but the lead proved too great to overcome as Woodlee and Liguori scored two straight points and evened the match for the Terriers with the 25-16 win.
The third set was decided in extra points after Davidson lost an early 10-6 lead. Trailing 15-14, the Wildcats put together a 5-0 stretch punctuated by a pair of Perzinski aces to go ahead, 19-15. But the Terriers kept attacking and tied the set at 23 on a kill by Anderson. Davidson had a set point on a Wofford service error by Styles but extended play with its own error. Liguori's kill gave Wofford got a set point but she followed with an error. A kill by Sewell put Davidson in charge, 26-25, but Dorsey knotted the score again. Brown put away a pass from junior Erin Lupfer for Davidson's third set-point chance, but Wofford finally ended the set, winning the next three points to go ahead 2-1 in the match with the 29-27 victory.
But the Wildcats shrugged it off in the fourth set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead behind three kills from Pisel. Davidson pushed its lead to 17-7 on two straight points from Brown and Benedict to force the Terriers into a timeout. Wofford used a 7-2 run to cut Davidson's lead in half, 19-14, but the Wildcats won six of the last 10 points, and Sewell's set-winner forced the decisive set with the 25-18 win.
Once again Davidson was in control early, taking a 6-3 lead on a pair of kills from each Pisel and Sewell in the fifth set. Wofford, though, tied the score on a pair of Wildcat hitting errors and a kill by Wendy Burnett. The 'Cats pushed back with a 4-1 run to reclaim a 10-7 lead, but Wofford tied the score again with three straight scores. A Davidson error gave the Terriers the one-point advantage, 11-10, in the abbreviated set, but Wofford's Tara Gough served it into the net, and the Wildcats took advantage. A kill by Perzinski and an ace from Brown forced Wofford into one final timeout, and Perzinski and Brown put away two straight sets from Owen to lift Davidson to the 15-11 win for the match.
Davidson travels to Charleston next weekend for a pair of SoCon matches, playing at The Citadel at 4 p.m. Saturday and the College of Charleston at 2 p.m. Sunday.
