STATESBORO, Ga. — Victor Roache went 3-for-7 with a home run and five RBI to lead the Georgia Southern Eagles to a pair of victories over the Davidson Wildcats Friday night at JI Clements Stadium in Southern Conference Baseball action.
Roache's three-run home run lifted Georgia Southern (29-21, 16-10 SoCon) to a 7-4 win over Davidson (18-28, 8-20 SoCon) in the first game of the doubleheader, and he went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the Eagles to a 5-2 win in the second game.
Despite a scoreless game through five innings, the Wildcats got lead off hits from senior designated hitter Danny Weiss (1-for-5) and sophomore third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-4) in the second and fourth innings of the first game, respectively, and a pair of one-out hits from freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (2-for-4, RBI) and junior first baseman Drew Gadaire (1-for-3, RBI) in the fifth. Davidson then took the lead on a two-out, two-run home run by freshman catcher Daniel Gerow (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) in the sixth that also scored sophomore shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-2), who was hit by a pitch.
Georgia Southern, though, answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by league leader Roache, and the Eagles added a run in the seventh on an RBI-ground out by Scooter Williams and two more in the eighth on RBI-hits from Brent Pugh and Eric Phillips to go ahead, 7-2.
The Wildcats started the ninth with two straight hits by Zeblo and Gerow, and scored a pair of runs as Brandt doubled in Zeblo and Gadaire's sac fly plated Gerow, but it was all they would get as the Eagles took the first game, 7-4.
Gerow led the Wildcats, who finished with eight hits, by batting 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Junior LHP Chris Lamb (L, 1-7) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and striking out two in six innings.
The Eagles finished with seven hits, led by Roache (1-for-3, HR, 3 RBI), while Phillips (2-for-4, RBI) and Cochrane (2-for-3) each had a pair. RHP Chris Beck (W, 7-3) earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven in six innings.
Davidson had the first good scoring chance in the second game when after a leadoff double by Weiss in the second, junior second baseman James Cerbie and Zeblo took two-out walks to load the bases. But it was the Eagles who scored first, going ahead 2-0 on a two-RBI double by Roache in the fifth.
The Wildcats knotted the game in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run by Weiss, which also scored Gadaire, who hit a one-out single to left field. Georgia Southern, though, answered in the bottom half, taking advantage of a pair of two-out walks and an error and converting an RBI-single by Williams into a pair of scores.
Davidson threatened in the top of the seventh as pinch hitter Jack McLindon's leadoff walk was followed by a double from Zeblo, but relievers Jarrete Leverette and Will Middour (S, 1) struck out three straight Wildcats to get out of the inning. The Eagles tacked on a final run in the home half of the inning on an RBI-single by Cochrane.
The Eagles finished with nine hits, led once again by Roache, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Andy Moye (W, 6-1) earned the win after holding Davidson to two runs on three hits and striking out eight in six innings. Middour earned the save by striking out six in 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
Weiss was 2-for-4 and had two of Davidson's four hits in the nightcap. Senior RHP Andy Bass (L, 2-3) was tagged with the loss, after allowing two runs on one hit in one inning of relief of senior RHP Ian Horkley.
Georgia Southern and Davidson will play the final game of the series on Monday at 4 p.m.
