STATESBORO, Ga. — Senior right-handed reliever Mike Frongello made his SoCon-tying 135th career appearance, but the Georgia Southern Eagles defeated the Davidson Wildcats, 5-2, Monday evening at JI Clements Stadium in the Wildcats' final regular-season SoCon game.

Senior right fielder Sam Payne's RBI-double tied the game in the second, but Georgia Southern (30-21, 17-10 SoCon) scored single runs in four of the final six innings to defeat Davidson (18-29, 8-21 SoCon).

The Eagles took the lead with a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Victor Roache that scored center fielder Shawn Payne, who hit a one-out triple to the gap in right field. Davidson knotted the game in its next at-bat, as Payne's (2-for-5, RBI) two-out double scored junior second baseman James Cerbie (double, 1-for-3).

Junior RHP Ryan Overcash (L, 2-6) faced the minimum in the bottom of the second before the Eagles scored an unearned run in the third inning. After loading the bases on two outs, shortstop Eric Phillips scored the go-ahead run when designated hitter Michael Buruss reached on a fielder's choice and an error, but Overcash got a fly out from catcher Tom Richardson to end the inning and keep the game within reach.

Cerbie drew a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on an infield single by freshman catcher Daniel Gerow (1-for-4) in the fourth, but Joe Lower (W, 1-2) took the mound in relief of starter Matt Murray for the final out. Lower retired three hitters in the next two innings, and the Eagles added a single run in both the fourth and fifth to make him a winner.

Georgia Southern scored a final, unearned run in the seventh inning against Frongello, tying The Citadel's Raymond Copenhaver in his 135th career appearance, as first baseman Steve Cochrane singled in Payne, who reached on a fielding error. Senior RHP Andy Bass left two on the base paths, and the Wildcats added one more score in the eighth, as junior first baseman Matt Ray (1-for-4) drove in senior designated hitter Danny Weiss (1-for-4), who reached on a fielder's choice.

Will Middour (S, 2) came out of the Georgia Southern bullpen for the final out of the inning and allowed just a two-out base hit to Payne in the ninth to earn the save.

Georgia Southern finished with six hits, led by Payne, who batted 2-for-3. Davidson tallied eight hits, two each by Payne and junior center fielder Drew Gadaire (2-for-4). Overcash took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and striking out one in four innings. Senior LHP Mac Hunter and freshman RHP Danny Mooney each tossed a hitless, shutout inning of relief for the Wildcats, and Bass struck out two and did not allow a hit over the final two innings.

The Wildcats will conclude the regular season tomorrow with a 6:30 p.m. game at Clemson.
