STATESBORO, Ga. — The Georgia Southern Eagles defeated the Davidson Wildcats, 3-0 (19-25, 18-25, 14-25), Tuesday night in a midweek Southern Conference volleyball match at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Enjoli Johnson led Georgia Southern (12-10, 4-2 SoCon) with 11 kills and hit .556 in the match. Kate Van Dyke finished with 34 assists, and Lauren LaRocque paced the defense with 13 digs. Moriah Bellissimo added 11 digs and eight kills.
Davidson (12-7, 2-4 SoCon) was led by sophomore middle hitter Tindall Sewell, who finished with 10 kills and three blocks, while hitting .588 in the match. Senior outside hitter Christine Perzinski and sophomore outside hitter Caroline Brown finished with seven and six kills, respectively, and junior setter Ariel Ley tallied 26 assists. Junior libero Molly Crenshaw captained the defense with 15 digs, and sophomore defensive specialist Jenna Ptaschinski added 10.
The Wildcats took a 4-2 lead to start the first set behind kills from Perzinski and Sewell, but the Eagles scored the next two points to knot the score and pulled ahead, 8-6. Davidson answered with a 6-3 run, including five straight points, to take a one-point lead, 12-11, on a kill by Sewell and two from Perzinski. But Georgia Southern took control of the set with a 10-2 run to open a 21-14 lead and went on to win the first set, 25-19, on a kill by Meredith Paskert.
Georgia Southern carried that momentum into the second set, taking a 12-3 lead as Johnson and Bellissimo each scored a pair of points for the Eagles. The Wildcats outscored the Eagles 6-4 over the next 10 points to narrow the gap to 16-9 on a Perzinski kill, but Georgia Southern closed out the set with a 9-5 run for a 25-14 win to pull ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Wildcats took a 4-1 lead to start the third set, but again Georgia Southern battled back to knot the score. The final frame was a back-and-forth affair from that point, with five ties and two lead changes, until the Eagles used a late 8-2 run to open a 23-17 lead. After a kill by senior opposite Erin Lupfer, a kill by Bethany Sanford and a Wildcat hitting error lifted Georgia Southern to a 25-18 win for the match.
Davidson continues on the road this weekend, traveling to UNCG for a 7 p.m. match on Friday and to Elon for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday.
