
Cougars Too Much in 3-0 Defeat of Wildcats

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Despite a pair of hitters in double figures, the Davidson Volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision (25-14, 29-27, 25-19) to the College of Charleston Cougars Saturday afternoon at Carolina First Arena.
Junior Sarabeth Peele finished with 12 kills to pace Davidson (7-22, 4-9), while sophomore Madison Benedict added 11 kills on just 18 attempts to hit a team-best .500. Junior setter Anna Bradbury finished with 34 assists, and freshman Molly Crenshaw totaled nine digs.
For Charleston (15-11, 11-3), Ginny Phillips finished with nine kills, and Emily Sawin added seven. Setter Cole Dawley finished with 25 assists and also led the Cougar defense with 11 digs.
The Cougars jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead to start the match and went on to win the first set, 25-14. Charleston led by as much as 20-6, before Davidson put together a 5-1 run to show some fight. But the lead proved too large to overcome and a Wildcat attack error delivered the opening frame for the Cougars.
Davidson had its best chance in the second set, when the 'Cats opened a 17-11 lead after behind a 6-0 run after both teams traded points. The Cougars answered with four straight scores to close to 17-15 before Peele put away a set from Bradbury to squelch the scoring. A Cougar error would give Davidson a 19-15 lead, but Charleston would win the next five points to grab a 20-19 advantage. Peele evened the score again, and the two teams traded possessions until a Cougar error gave Davidson a set point at 25-24. Charleston's Elyse Chubb won the next point, though, and Charleston got its on set point try at 26-25. Back-to-back kills from Peele put Davidson in control, 27-26, but two straight Davidson hitting errors lifted Charleston to the 29-27 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third and final set was tied at every point until Charleston busted up a 7-7 stalemate and took a 13-8 lead behind a 6-1 run. The Cougars controlled the set the rest of the way and, though the Wildcats fought off four straight match points, went on to win the match with the 25-19 triumph.
Davidson will play its final road match of the season tomorrow, traveling to The Citadel for a 2 p.m. contest.
