Layup Line
• Coming off a fifth straight postseason appearance, Davidson opens the 2009-10 campaign at No. 11/10 Butler (AP/Coaches Poll).
• It's the fifth time the Wildcats have opened the season against a ranked opponent during Bob McKillop's 21-year tenure. Four of those five games have been against Duke, and twice the Blue Devils were ranked first in the country.
• Davidson is 13-75 when playing a ranked opponent and has lost its last five.
• Davidson is 4-1 in its last five season openers.
• It's Davidson's first season opener on the road since 2005, when the 'Cats fell 84-55 at No. 1 Duke.
• Davidson returns 10 lettermen and two starters from last year's team, which posted a 27-8 record and split two games in the postseason NIT.
• The Wildcats lost 59 percent of their scoring and 44 percent of their rebounding from the 2008-09 squad.
• The personnel losses are nothing new for the Wildcats. Davidson lost seven seniors and four starters from its 2006 NCAA Tournament team and managed to post a 29-5 record and advance to the NCAA Tourney in 2007.
• Butler returns all five starters and all 12 lettermen from its 2008-09 team, which posted a 26-6 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
• The Bulldogs are favored to win the Horizon League, and some prognosticators believe Butler has a Final Four caliber squad.
Series History
• Butler took the first game in the series last February, a 75-63 victory in the ESPN BracketBuster game in Belk Arena.
• Gordon Hayward led the Bulldogs with 27 points and knocked down 4-of-7 from 3-point range and 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.
• Stephen Curry led the Wildcats with 20 points, and Andrew Lovedale posted 15 points and seven rebounds. Will Archambault added 11 points and five boards.
• The Wildcats committed 19 turnovers and shot 42 percent from the floor.
Season Openers
• Davidson holds a 67-29 (.697) record in season openers. Its first win to start a year came against Guilford during the 1908-09 season, and the last was a 107-83 victory over Guilford last year.
• Under head coach Bob McKillop, the Wildcats hold a mark of 9-11 in season openers.
• Eight of Davidson's season-opening losses during McKillop's tenure have come at the hand of teams from either the ACC, SEC, A-10 or Big 12.
Last Time Out
• Four Wildcats scored in double figures as Davidson earned an 87-65 exhibition win over Lenoir-Rhyne Nov. 7.
• Seniors Will Archambault and Bryant Barr led the 'Cats in scoring with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Archambault hit 7-of-13 from the field, including one trey, and was 3-for-3 on free throws. Barr went 6-for-11, hitting 5-of-9 from behind the arc.
• Steve Rossiter and Brendan McKillop both scored 10 points each.
• As a team, Davidson shot 55.0 percent (33-of-60) and hit 11-of-25 (44.0 percent) 3-pointers.
• The Wildcats never trailed, holding the lead from McKillop's opening steal and fast-break layup until the end of the game.
• The Cats' opened the contest with a 17-point scoring run, yielding their first point on a free throw 5:57 into the game and not allowing a field goal until 6:16 in.
PFL
• Despite this being just their second meeting on hardwood, Butler and Davidson do have familiarity. The two schools are members of the Pioneer Football League.
• The Bulldogs won this year's gridiron contest 14-7 Oct. 31, at the Butler Bowl.
SoCon Preseason Polls
• The Wildcats were picked third in the South Division in the Southern Conference preseason coaches poll. Will Archambault was named preseason all-conference.
• Davidson was picked second in the South Division in the SoCon Sports Media Association Poll.
• Western Carolina was picked to win the North, and College of Charleston was picked to win the South in both polls.
The Road to Europe
• Davidson went on its fifth foreign tour under Bob McKillop, traveling to Italy and Slovenia in August.
• The Wildcats posted a 4-2 record in six games there.
• Will Archambault led the team in scoring, averaging 18.5 points a game, and Bryant Barr added 15 points a contest.
• Aaron Bond chipped in 14.3 points a game, and Brendan McKillop averaged 12.1 points and 7.5 assists.
'Cats in the Pros
• Two former Wildcats from the 2008-09 team joined the ranks of professional basketball, making 38 former Davidson players coached by Bob McKillop playing professionally either in the U.S. or overseas.
• Stephen Curry was selected seventh by the Golden State Warriors in the NBA draft.
• Andrew Lovedale is playing in France.
• Jason Richards, a 2008 graduate and member of the Elite Eight team, was selected in the fourth round of the NBA D-League draft in November.
