
Georgia Southern Completes Comeback, Downs Davidson in Five Sets

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Georgia Southern came back from a two-set deficit to defeat the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team 3-2 (15-25, 24-26, 25-15, 25-17, 16-14) Tuesday night in Southern Conference action at Belk Arena.
Davidson (9-22, 5-10) dominated the first two sets and took a commanding 2-0 lead, before Georgia Southern started its comeback. Conversely, Georgia Southern (20-10, 10-5) controlled the third set and went on to win the fourth set to force the fifth and decisive frame. The match came down to the final set, where the score was tied seven times and the lead changed three times before the Eagles finally prevailed in extra points.
Junior Sarabeth Peele led the Wildcats with 22 kills, joined in double figures by sophomore Christine Perzinski with 10 kills and 10 digs. Setter Anna Bradbury finished with 52 assists, while freshman Molly Crenshaw paced the defense with 19 digs.
Sarah Gildersleeve totaled 15 kills to lead the Eagles, who also got 14 kills from Bethany Sanford. Setter Kate Van Dyke posted 46 assists to go along with 10 digs. Cristin Haines led the Eagle defense with 27 digs.
The Wildcats came out blazing in the first set, hitting .500 as a team to just .130 for the Eagles. Peele was perfect in the opening frame, finishing with seven kills on just 11 attempts. Davidson turned an early 10-5 lead into a 15-9 advantage and rolled to the 25-15 win to take the first set.
Davidson continued to hold the momentum in the second set, as Peele picked up another five kills. The Wildcats opened a 7-2 lead, and leading 16-13, won four straight points to take a 19-13 lead. A pair of hitting errors by Georgia Southern gave the 'Cats a set-point chance, 24-21, but the Eagles rattled off four straight points to force the extra possessions. Peele, though, won the next point and a kill from sophomore Erin Lupfer lifted Davidson to a 26-24 win and a 2-0 edge in the match.
The Wildcats took an early 5-3 lead in the third set, but Georgia Southern knotted things at six on a Wildcat setting error and took the lead with a second straight Davidson error. From that point, Georgia Southern would continue to add to that lead, controlling play and surviving in the match with the 25-15 win.
The fourth set played out similarly with Davidson winning the first two points, but the Eagles taking the edge, 4-3, on a kill from Kirby Monson. Georgia Southern would never relinquish that lead, and Davidson would get only as close as 14-12, before the Eagles knotted the match with the 25-17 victory.
The Wildcats seemed to be in control in the fifth and abbreviated set, grabbing a 4-1 lead and then a 5-2 edge, but a 4-1 Eagle run knotted the set at six. The teams traded points, until tied at eight, Georgia Southern won three points to open an 11-8 lead. Davidson got a 4-1 run of its own behind kills from Peele and sophomore Madison Benedict and a couple of hitting errors from the Eagles to tie the set at 12. Georgia Southern won a match-point chance, 14-13, on an attack error by Peele, but she won the next point to help Davidson survive. Back-to-back kills by Claybaugh, though, delivered the 16-14 win for the match as the Eagles completed their comeback.
Davidson will play its final match of the regular season against Chattanooga at 4 p.m. Saturday at Belk Arena.
