
Samford Stays Perfect in SoCon with 3-1 Win over Wildcats

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford Bulldogs moved to a perfect 4-0 record in Southern Conference play with a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-15, 25-10) win over the Davidson Wildcats Sunday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
Samford (10-7, 4-0 SoCon) had a pair of hitters in double figures, led by Sheriden Stangohr's 13 kills, and hit .347 as a team. Rachel Gadberry tallied 10 kills for the Bulldogs, who also got 40 assists from setter Hillary Fountain and 10 digs from Samantha Bland. Stangohr also posted a match-high four blocks.
For Davidson (3-16, 0-3), junior Sarabeth Peele led the way with 15 kills, followed by nine from sophomore Madison Benedict. Junior Anna Bradbury finished with 24 assists, and freshman Molly Crenshaw led the Wildcat defense with 12 digs.
The Wildcats controlled the first set with an early 5-2 run, pulling ahead on three straight Bulldog hitting errors, before Samford battled back to knot things at 8-8. Davidson reclaimed the three-point margin with a 4-1 swing, including a kill by Benedict, but the Bulldogs took control of the set, opening up a 15-12 lead by winning six straight on the serve of Casey Garvey and kills from Stangohr and Shelby Brandon. After a timeout, Peele won the next point for the Wildcats, but the Bulldogs rattled off three straight to push their lead to 18-13. Davidson would cut the lead to three, 21-18, but Samford closed out the set with four straight scores for the 25-18 win.
The Bulldogs opened the second set with a 6-3 run, but Davidson stayed in the game before finally grabbing a 15-14 lead midway through on a kill by Jorden Benedict and two straight aces from Peele. Fountain took the next point for the Bulldogs to knot the score at 15, and the teams would trade points until a 3-0 run lifted the 'Cats ahead 20-17. Davidson would lead by as many as 24-20, before Allie Bettinger helped the Bulldogs survive a set point. Sophomore Erin Lupfer put away a set from Bradbury to deliver the 25-21 win and tie the match at a set apiece.
After the break, though, the Bulldogs made quick work of the Wildcats, rolling to 25-15 and 25-10 wins to secure their fourth Southern Conference victory. Samford grabbed a quick 8-3 lead in the third frame and would lead by 20-10 en route to the 25-15 win. In the fourth and final set, the Bulldogs won the first nine points and would open up a 24-6 lead, but Davidson fought off four straight match points in the 25-10 decision.
Davidson will return to Belk Arena to host a pair of SoCon foes this weekend. The Citadel visits Belk Saturday Oct. 10 at 4 p.m., followed by the Coll. of Charleston Sunday at 2 p.m.
