DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson junior guard Stephen Curry has been named the College Athlete of the Year by the Sporting News. The announcement comes in the new issue currently on news stands, which features interviews with Curry and SN's pro and high school athletes of the year.
Curry finished fourth in the country in scoring, averaging 25.9 points a contest, a season ago. He set an NCAA record with 162 3-pointers and shot 43.9 percent from long distance while leading the Wildcats to the Midwest Regional final, where he was named the regional's Most Outstanding Player. He scored 30 or more points in 11 contests, 40 or more points twice, 20 or more in 27 games and shot 48 percent from the floor en route to earning second-team All-America honors.
The 2008-09 preseason All-American hasn't slowed down this season and leads the country in scoring, averaging 30 points a game, to go along with 6.7 assists. He has scored 40 or more points three times this season, including career-high 44-point performances at Oklahoma and against NC State. The Wildcats are off to an 8-2 start, their best since the 1969-70 campaign.
Curry has also been named to the Naismith Trophy watch list. The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2008-09 college basketball season. The watch list does not include incoming freshmen, although those student-athletes will be considered in the first vote in February, 2009. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded at the 2009 NCAA Men's Final Four in Detroit, Mich.
For the sixth consecutive season, presenting sponsor AT&T will once again set the standard in allowing fans to participate in determining this year's winner. Through the power and ease of text messaging, fan voting will account for an unprecedented 25 percent of the final results – more than any other national college basketball award. At the beginning of February, CBS' “AT&T at the Half” will feature a weekly Naismith Trophy update highlighting the players in contention.
In February, the Naismith Trophy voting academy, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country, will narrow its early season list to the Top 30 players in the nation. Those players, and others who distinguish themselves throughout the season, will be eligible for the final ballot in March.
Davidson is back in action Monday, Dec. 29, when the Wildcats travel to Southern Conference South Division rival College of Charleston. The game, which tips off at 9 p.m., will be televised live on ESPNU.
