DAVIDSON, N.C. - Senior Danielle Hemerka netted 16 points, and sophomore Alex Thompson tallied a career-high 14 points and four assists as Davidson increased its home winning streak to five straight games dating back to the end of last season with a 79-61 women's basketball victory over East Tennessee State at John M. Belk Arena Thursday night.
The win gave Davidson its third straight over ETSU and improved to 15-11 in the all-time series.
Hemerka was 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-for-6 from long distance, match her career-best for made three-pointers, to lead the Wildcats, who canned 9-of-19 3-pointers and registered 17 assists on 23 made buckets.
It was a battle of two different defensive philosophies - the trapping, turnover-producing style of East Tennessee State (3-4) against the long-shot forcing, tough-interior zone of Davidson (5-2). The Wildcat defense allowed the Lady Bucs to shoot 29 percent from the field, including 1-of-11 from 3-point land, while East Tennessee State forced 27 Davidson turnovers.
After the Lady Bucs trimmed a nine-point early second-half deficit to four, Davidson answered with a 17-5 stretch, capped by a Honna Housley fast-break layup, to open commanding a 59-43 cushion with 5:15 left in the game.
Housley, who finished the game with 15 points, had seven during the run, which proved to be the knockout blow as the Lady Bucs could get no closer than eight points for the remainder of the contest. The 'Cats went 15-for-16 from the free-throw line inside the last 3:40 to ice the victory. All told, Davidson made 24-of-28 from the charity stripe.
East Tennessee State used a press and half-court traps to disrupt the Wildcats and get back in the game midway through the second half. Trailing 38-29, the Lady Bucs went on a 9-4 run and made the margin 42-38 on a Latisha Belcher free throw.
TaRonda Wiles scored eight points during the stretch and finished the contest with a game-high 19. Siarre Evans posted 12 points and eight rebounds.
Trailing 8-6, Davidson scored 10 straight points, five from Hemerka, to open a 16-8 advantage midway through the up-tempo first half. The lead grew to 22-10 on a Mandy Halbersleben (9 points) layup off a Thompson feed with 8:42 to play.
The Wildcats turned the ball over on seven of their next nine possessions as ETSU picked up the defensive intensity, but the Davidson defense stayed strong, allowing just one Lady Buc field goal during the stretch. Davidson went into the break with a 29-21 cushion.
Davidson returns to action with a contest at seventh-ranked Georgia (AP Poll) Dec. 9. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
Game Notes: Davidson coach Annette Watts was honored before the game for becoming the school's career leader in victories… The contest was the last of a three-game homestand for the 'Cats... The Wildcats have now won seven straight games in December, dating back to last season
