DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Senior forward Kayli Maxwell scored her second game-winning goal of the season and her 39th career goal, becoming Davidson's all-time leading scorer and leading the 'Cats to a 3-2 win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Belk Turf Field on Wednesday night.
Maxwell displaces Cathy Inabnet (1977-80) as the team's all-time leading scorer. Already the 'Cats all-time leader in assists entering the season, she will finish her career atop all three major offensive categories.
Davidson improves to 9-7 overall, while Appalachian falls to 3-15.
In a career year, Maxwell has added seven assists to her three-year total of 16, extending her lead over Ashley Hart (13; 1997-2000) in the record book.
Entering the season ranked fifth in career points, she has also moved atop the list with a career-best 31 points in 2007 for a total of 99. Gigi Cooke (1987-90) previously held the record with 82 career points.
"It is a great honor for Kayli," head coach Ginny Sutton said. "I am extremely proud of her, and of the entire senior class. They are really stepping up at the end of the season and looking to finish out their careers on a high note. Any time you can beat a team twice in one season, that's a great accomplishment."
In the 'Cats 3-2 triumph over Appalachian, it was all seniors, all night. Having career years of their own, seniors Catherine Ransone and Eleanor Cowley netted their ninth and sixth scores of the season, respectively, to give the 'Cats an early 2-0 lead.
Fellow classmate Jen Willis connected with Ransone in just the fifth minute of play, as Ransone put away a rebound off a penalty corner attempt for the first score of the night.
In the driving rain, Ransone then tallied an assist in the 32nd minute, as Cowley beat the Appalachian State defense down the field to make it 2-0 in favor of Davidson.
Maxwell's score in the 41st minute proved the game-winner, as she netted a long pass from Cowley to give the 'Cats a 3-0 lead after the break.
Despite outshooting the 'Cats 15-12, Appalachian State didn't get on the board until the 51st minute of play, as Alicia Larkins scored in traffic in front of the goal. Katie Price put the Mountaineers within one, getting an unassisted score in the 61st minute, but the Wildcat defense held the rest of the way to preserve the margin.
Sophomore keeper Christa Goeke went the distance in goal for the 'Cats, making eight saves, while Appalachian's Denise Adams had three.
Appalachian State earned a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Davidson will host Radford at 2:30 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 27 in the 'Cats final regular-season game of the season. The team's six seniors -- Cowley, Ginnie Friddell, Maxwell, Ransone, Misty Stallings and Willis -- will be honored in senior-day festivities prior to the game.
