DAVIDSON — Wilson Perkins tossed seven scoreless innings, and Eli Putnam hit a grand slam to lead the Davidson baseball team to a 9-2 series-opening win over St. Bonaventure Thursday night at Wilson Field.
With the win, the Wildcats (20-27) reached the 20-win mark for the 10th straight season (excluding the pandemic-abbreviated 2020 campaign), while improving to 6-13 in Atlantic 10 play. St. Bonaventure fell to 15-28 and 5-14.
Perkins (6-4) held the Bonnies at bay throughout his 13th start. He surrendered just three hits, including none until the fifth inning, and walked two, while striking out six. He had 1-2-3 innings in the first, fourth and seventh.
Meanwhile, Putnam hit his A-10 leading 15th home run — and his second grand slam of the year — with two outs and as part of a five-run fifth. Putnam also hit a grand slam against Penn State on March 3.
The 15-homer mark is the fifth-best single-season total in program history, matching Dave Turgeon (1987), Brian Fortier (2017) and Parker Nolan (2022).
Joe Haney's solo shot to left-center in the eighth made it 9-0.
Tyler Douglas had two doubles, and his first led to a 1-0 lead in the fifth when he scored on an error following an Aidan Rice bunt. Hunter Anderson scored on a wild pitch in the sixth, and in the seventh, Cider Canon's sacrifice fly plated a run and Douglas doubled in another.
