DAVIDSON — A six-run first inning and a seven-inning start from Isaac Fix propelled the Davidson baseball team to an 8-1 win over St. Bonaventure Friday afternoon at Wilson Field.
With the win, the Wildcats (21-27 overall, 7-13 A-10) clinched at least their third Atlantic 10 Conference series victory, with Saturday's series finale offering a chance at a sweep. The Bonnies fell to 15-29 and 5-15.
Davidson scored five of its first-inning runs with two outs, as Nick Calero cleared the bases with a double to right-center, and Joe Haney hit a two-run homer to the same gap, giving him round-trippers in back-to-back games. Cider Canon's RBI-bloop single opened the scoring.
With the early run support, Fix settled in for his longest career outing, surpassing last week's 4.1-inning effort against Rhode Island by almost three frames. He allowed seven hits and one earned run, walked two and struck out four. He posted 1-2-3 innings in the second and fifth and induced double plays to quickly move through the sixth and seventh.
Canon finished 3-for-4 and a home run shy of the cycle. He tripled to right-center in the fourth and scored when an errant throw bounced away, making it 7-0. In the sixth, one batter after Eli Putnam's sacrifice fly scored Aidan Rice and made it 8-0, Canon hit a ground-rule double.
