With the setback, the Wildcats moved to 17-23 overall and 4-9 in the A-10, while Dayton improved to 26-15 and 8-4.
Hitting third in the Wildcats' lineup, Eli Putnam hit his league-leading 13th home run in the first inning, and Cider Canon immediately followed with a solo shot of his own to give the Wildcats an early 2-0 lead. Putnam has now hit six home runs in the last six games.
The Wildcats also produced a four-run fourth inning, including a bases-clearing double by Noah Jouras, to lead 6-4.
But Dayton tied it with two runs in the fifth and moved ahead 7-6 on Paxton Tomaini's RBI-double in the sixth. Then the Flyers pulled away with four runs in the eighth, including two on an Eddie Yamin IV home run.
Canon, Jouras and Jake Wilhoit had two hits apiece.
Starter Wilson Perkins threw 5.1 innings and struck out seven.
