DAVIDSON — Michael O'Shaughnessy homered early and Davidson threatened late, but Morehead State claimed the baseball season opener 7-4 Friday evening at Wilson Field.
O'Shaughnessy's two-run shot to right-center in the first inning served as Davidson's emphatic first hit of the year and plated Jacob Friend, who had been hit-by-a-pitch.
But Morehead's Colton Becker hit a solo shot in the third, and the Eagles scored two runs off three hits and two Wildcat errors in the fourth to move ahead. They extended their lead to 7-2 with three runs on four hits in the ninth.
The Wildcats did get the potentially winning run to the plate in the ninth, after four walks and another Friend hit-by-pitch. Jack Cotrone and O'Shaughnessy plated runs with bases-loaded walks to cut the deficit to three, but Morehead's Matt Bettio forced a groundout to end it.
Tyler Douglas joined O'Shaughnessy with two hits, including a fourth-inning double.
On the mound, Wilson Perkins made his Davidson debut, throwing the first 3.1 innings. He struck out six before Matt Weber and Miles Jamieson combined for seven more strikeouts in the next five innings.
