Late Run and Free Throws Lift VCU Over Davidson

DAVIDSON — VCU outscored Davidson 23-9 over the last eight minutes and 55 seconds to erase a nine-point deficit and get by the Wildcats 63-58 in Atlantic 10 action Saturday evening inside John M. Belk Arena.
The 'Cats fell to 12-8 overall and 2-5 in league play, while the Rams won their fifth straight improving to 13-7 and 5-2.
Davidson, which closed the opening 20 minutes with eight unanswered points, carried its momentum into the second half to open-up a nine-point advantage, the largest by either team.
After Bobby Durkin drilled a triple to put the 'Cats up 49-40 with 9:19 left, VCU used a 12-2 stretch bookended by 3-pointers to go back in front 52-51. The Rams' last 12 points came from the charity stripe, as they finished 12-of-14 from the line down the stretch.
Max Shulga, who gave the lead back to VCU with 6:16 to play, led his club with 18 points, including four treys.
The two teams traded multiple runs over the opening 20 minutes, including eight unanswered points by the Wildcats to close the half and take a 30-27 lead into the break. Davidson trailed 19-12 early before using a 10-2 spurt to go back in front.
Despite both teams shooting 37 percent from the floor, VCU connected on 10-of-26 from long range to the 'Cats 21.1 percent clip (4-19).
Connor Kochera paced the Wildcats with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Reed Bailey just missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Davidson finished with a commanding 40-27 advantage on the glass.
